For the Memorial Library 1992 will bring a transition from the planning and preparation for a major building program to the excitement and disruption of the construction phase itself. At this time the schedule calls for work to commence around the beginning of March. As the eastern portion of the present building is to be replaced by a four-storey addition (with two storeys hidden below ground level in the ravine), the preliminary work will include such things as the removal and storage of our beloved stained glass window, pending its move to a new location in the present building, and the erection of temporary walls close to the photocopiers and extending back into staff work areas. This of course will mean moving the copiers, not to mention the periodical reading area and the Children's Department, into parts of the building that are already overcrowded. Obviously it will be a challenge for all of us, but we will do all we can to see that the construction work is phased in such a way as to minimize disruptions to the Library service.
