This is in fact a question that the Library Board examined closely a year ago, as it became increasingly evident that our 14 year old vehicle is approaching the end of its operating life. Our bookmobile currently operates 3.5 days per week, stopping at 11 regular locations between Park Royal and Horseshoe Bay. Regular users are obviously devoted fans of the service, as demonstrated by the frequent letters and expressions of support we receive, and by the large number who turned out a couple of years ago to help celebrate the 20th anniversary of bookmobile service in West Van. However there is a tendency in some quarters to regard the bookmobile as a frill, an anachronism that cannot really be afforded any longer, and this is why the Library Board decided to subject the service to close scrutiny before deciding whether to request funding for a replace- ment vehicle.
