The most urgent requirement at present is for room to house a slowly growing collection (including 20,000 books currently in storage). A branch library of say 40,000 volumes isn't equipped to solve that kind of problem. Hence the focus by the Library Board on expansion of the present building and a substantial enhancement of the bookmobile service, in terms of hours of availability as well as number of regular stops. For the foreseeable future this remains the most cost-effective approach, in the Board's view, for serving the library needs of the whole community. REFERENCE DEPARTMENT In a library such as West Vancouver's, there is a need to provide a global selection of resources in order to respond effectively to user information needs. Some of the titles the Reference Department has acquired lately indicate the variety of subjects considered for information and research purposes. With the newly purchased 8-volume Encyclopedia of Human Biology we see medical topics covered that were previously dealt with only in academic publications. Because of the importance, not to mention the controversy, surrounding the Gitskan-Wet'suwet'en Indian land claim decision brought down by Chief Justice Allan McEachern of the B.C. Supreme Court, we have obtained the full text of the "Reasons for Judgment". A landmark Supreme Court of Canada decision, this one dealing with Native fishing rights (the "Sparrow Decision"), is also available in the Reference Department. The Assembly of British Columbia Arts Councils has published The Arts Resource Book, which covers such areas as fund- raising, government sources of support, foundation assistance, and organizations providing support for the arts community.
