The great success of the Eagle Harbour Community Centre is cited as proof of the wisdom of branching out. However the situations are not really similar. The Recreation Department can offer a very popular and effective community service to the western region at relatively low cost, once the additional facility has been prepared and equipped. A branch library is different, and in West Vancouver presents special challenges. The first is that our citizens are used to a well-stocked library of approximately 200.000 items; a branch offering 30,000 - 40.000 volumes (relatively large for a branch) would soon get "read out" and lose the interest of most people. Most of us visit the library relatively infrequently, for example once every 2-4 weeks (while we might feel dedicated enough to visit the Rec Center a couple of times a week). Given West Van's geography, most of our westerly residents travel east - to Park Royal or downtown, etc. frequently enough that a trip to the library can easily be fitted in.
