One last anniversary: we've just commenced our 7th year of Sunday operation, being open between 1 and 5 p.m. each Sunday from October 7 through to the end of June. Come and greet your friends and neighbours at the Memorial Library some Simday afternoon1 % REFERENCE DEPARTMENT Archaeological inquiry is a growing interest amongst library users and is reflected in the number of related titles added to the collection over the last few years. The newest addition to the Reference Department is the Hammond Past Worlds; the Times Atlas of Archaeology. This book makes the subject accessible to most readers in that its presentation is uncomplicated while at the same time dealing with questions of a different nature. The atlas contains time charts and interprets the remains of the earliest empires of each continent. As well as covering the well documented classical civilizations, such as Greece, Rome, Persia, India and China, the book examines the mysterious civilizations of the Steppes, the Yucatan, the Andes, the Arctic and Easter Island. Quite often books are donated in memory of someone. One such title is Art of Our Century; the Chronicle of Western Art, 1900 to the Present. As the title indicates, it is a chronology, but makes information on artists and genres accessible in a magazine- style format. Each presentation is accompanied by a stimulating narrative with fullâ€"colour reproductions. In contrast. Art Past, Art Present is another new title which offers a different chronological approach to art history. The time frame ranges from prehistory to the 1980s, and is therefore broader in scope. There are discussions throughout the text dealing with artistic techniques, processes and technical innovations. For the critic of contemporary art it would most certainly be useful to peruse both books.
