Again, Keyword searching means typing in specific words that you feel encompass the title, subject or author of the work(s) you're attempting to locate. Want to know what the Memorial Library has on Italian Renaissance art? Type KSU=ART ITALY (KSU signifying keyword subject). The computer will tell you that we have 1,703" different subject headings containing the word ART, but only 20 containing both ART and ITALY. If we want to be even more specific, the computer tells us how to ado RENAISSANCE to the pot, reducing the number of subject headings combining those three items to only two. You can then identify the books in the collection which have this subject as a major focus. Try it yourself, using common words in combination to arrive at the specific title or subject you're seeking. And if you don't agree that the on-line catalogue is really quite a friendly guide, ask the nearby librarian, who definitely is. REFERENCE DEPARTMENT In most cases, when library users are searching for specific poems, the most efficient method is to consult a poetry index known as Granger's Index to Poetry. At the best of times, it is an unwieldy process, mainly because the book in which the poem exists is either in circulation, or the book is not owned by the Library. Now, with the use of micro-technology, a set of microfiche containing the texts of poetry books has been purchased by the Reference Department. With the GoreFiche: Granger Condensed and its accompanying index the patron in search of a poem can access the text in one place without having to run between departments. Oxford University Press has recently published A Social and Economic Atlas of India. The presentation of this atlas is balanced and authoritative, including bibliographic source references. The coverage is comprehensive, including social and economic prospects for the 1990s, and will prove invaluable for the researcher, ADULT SERVICES IN THE GALLERY_____ acrylics by West Vancouver artist Sharon Quirke will be on display in the Library September 4-16.
