Consultants confirmed that expanding the existing building was the most cost-effective means for solving the problem. The opening of a small branch library, possibly at Horseshoe Bay, Caulfeild Plateau or Park Royal was recognized as a poor alternative - costing less initially but involving substan- tially higher operating costs in terms of extra staffing, part duplication of collections, computer communications, transportation of materials back and forth and so on. A branch library in West Vancouver would receive relatively little use and would do little to solve the main library's space squeeze. Architects in 1987 confirmed that expansion of the present building was the only practical solution. The site is capable of accommodating all foreseeable space requirements. The cost of a first phase handling 20 years' growth was placed at $4.75 million. WEST VANCOUVER MEMORIAL LIBRARY fiT 1950 Marine Drive West Vancouver B.C. V7V 1J8 (604) 926-3291
