LIBRARY HOURS - 1990 Monday to Friday 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. Saturday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sundays (Oct.-June) 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. MARCH LIBRARY NEWS SUNDAY OPENING EXTENDED On October 14, 1984, the Memorial Library became the third Lower Mainland library (after Vancouver and New Westminster) to offer loan and reference services to its patrons on Sundays. At the time it seemed a somewhat radical step, coming before West Vancouver voters approved Sunday shopping in the community. Nowadays, most of us take Sunday shopping - and library visits - for granted: the period between 1 and 5 p.m. on Sundays has become one of the busiest of the week for the Memorial Library, with an item being checked out every 8 seconds on average, compared to the normal, sedate pace of something borrowed every 15 seconds. We frequently receive requests to extend Sunday operation beyond the original schedule of mid-October to April 30. Students in particular are obviously sorry to lose the Library as a research and study centre on Sundays before they have completed their school or college year and dispersed for the Summer. Consequently the Library Board recently requested, and Municipal Council approved, an extension of Sunday operation to the end of June.
