John ^^Navvv Jack'^ Thomas - Part Two A Research Paper - Part One. - cont'd. 1887 Pre-emption privileges, which had been suspended in 1882, were restored In 1886. All waterfront land was quickly taken though few others lived on their land full time. 1888 First recorded Aid to Navigation at First Narrows is "Navvy Jack's" rooster! The Paddle Steamer "YOSEMITE", lost in the fog on the morning of May 24, 1888, used a bearing obtained from the crowing of "Navvy Jack's" rooster to safely navigate the harbour entrance (Prospect Point Lighthouse was still in the future). 1891 Navvy Jack's son, a good boatman at age 10, rescued 6 year old Alfred Williams from drowning at the mouth of the Capllano. By strange coincidence, Alfred Williams' nephew, Lloyd, now (1987) [and still now in 2008] lives in the house built by Navvy Jack Thomas. The Williams family was, for about one year. Navvy Jack's only neighbour (1891). 1892 Navvy Jack, who would now be in his late fifties, apperantly encountered hard times at this point. He obtained a grubstake from either Walter Erwin of J. C. Keith (accounts differ) and embarked on an adventure in Barkervllle. Some time after his arrival there John Thomas died quite suddenly and was buried in the Barkervllle area. Mrs. Thomas and the children moved to the Reserve where her relatives resided and the Thomas land was reportedly sold for taxes. J. C. Keith, financier and ex-banker, acquired the property as a land speculation. The land lay vacant for several years. SA survey line for Keith Road was cut through the bush as far as Eagle Harbour but further work was suspended and the trail returned to nature. 1905 John Lawson and his brother- in-law, exploring the area on foot, happened on the homesite, purchased it from Keith and moved his family there in the spring of 1907. Lawson later moved the house a short distance to the west, added a front dormer, and lived in the Page S>x Cont'd. next column. John ^^Navvv Jack" Thomas - contact. house until 1928.
