John ^"Navvv Jack" Thomas - cont'd. were 10 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. Thomas had three daughters; Christine married Chief Henry Jack. Emma married Mr. William of Nanaimo. Mary married Mr. Walker of Hartley Bay. There is reference also of two sons, William and Sampson, but at this writing no further information is at hand. Further research into the family and its descendants is currently underway through Mr. Simon Baker of the Squamish Band. 1877 Josias Charles Hughes, account clerk at Moodys Mill, filed a pre-emption on D.L. 237(Ambleside) immediately east of Navvy Jack's property. Hughes never occupied the land but did receive a grant on 13 Feb. 1884. On Jan.15, 1896, Hughes was installed as founding Master of Mount Hermon Lodge, the first Masonic Lodge on Burrard Inlet. 1882 At this time. Navvy Jack is reported having a "shack" on the waterfront at the foot of Abbott Street in the Village of Granville. The location was described as "behind the Methodist Parsonage, across from Simmons Hole-in- the-Wall Saloon and just a few doors east of Madam Berdie Stewart's establishment". Obviously a center of commerce from which to promote grave! sales. 1886 C.P.Railway terminus was established in the new city of Vancouver. Navvy Jack and his sloop reported still in operation-twenty years serving the inlet. John Thomas' family wanted the children to come to England to be educated. Thomas chose, instead, to hire as Governess, a Miss wayne to see to their education. Miss Wayne later married Mr. Jones, founder of the Pioneer Tent and Awning Company. Thomas was fond of gardening, planted fruit trees and, according to his daughter, grew tobacco and sugar cane. Obviously an experimenter. He worked, for a time, at the Terminal Hotel in Vancouver. He traveled to and from work by rowboat from West Vancouver - our first Commuter! Navvy Jack will be continued in the next issue.
