Focus on Point Atkinson Submitted by Elaine Graham. At the end of March, the Department of Fisheries & Oceans unexpectedly announced it had money in their 2008 budget to fix the Radio Room at Point Atkinson if West Vancouver District would oversee the construction repairs. Work began right away. Radio room before repairs Page Eight Cont'd. next column. Point Atkinson - conP^d. The leaky shingle roof was the first to go, replaced by red sheets of steel. Next the rotten cedar siding was stripped from all four walls. Radio room after repairs. Double glazed, double hung aluminium windows, and hardy-plank siding were installed over rain screen insulation. The work, with wait times for delivery of materials, has taken no more than six weeks. Apparently, these modern materials will be practically maintenance-free and able to withstand the marine climate longer than the old ones. From the water, passing sailors will be dazzled by a building so bright, it is now a more visible day-marker than the light and tower. After a dozen years of neglect, the timely renovation of this building by the Department of Fisheries & Oceans is most appreciated by PALS. A special thanks to founding member, Ian MacDonald, for enduring so much government indifference before reaching this happy day!
