President's Message The success of the Summer Barbeque, under the leadership of Yvonne Bower, has given a boost to the start of a New Year for our Society. One of the features of the Luncheon was the honoring of our Life Members who contributed to the establishment of the Society in the early 1980s. Moving our office to another part of the Museum caused us to go through many files. In the process we discovered the large volume of work that went into the establishment of the Museum and the research for our archives. The work of Rupert Harrison was particularly important. His work in gathering the oral history of early residents of West Vancouver provided a gold mine of information for the book we are preparing for the Centennial. Through the efforts of our Archives and in particular Shaunna Moore, our archivist, we have found that many early members of the Society contributed both funds and time to ensure the history of our community was preserved. We honored seven of our Life Members at the Summer Barbeque. They included Heinz Berger, Katherine Dickinson, Hugh Johnston, Jim MacCarthy, Mack Minions, Ross Minions, and Betty Twigg. As we continue to gather materials, the realization of the importance of the work carried out by these founding members, continues to grow. We are working hard to gather materials for the establishment of our Web Site. We hope to have it up and operating in the next year. We continue to look for volunteers, with computer skills, to assist us in this new venture. We are currently part way through digitizing all of our newsletters. We hope that they will be a key part of the Web Site. Once up we hope that people visiting our site will be able to research the Newsletters for information on the history of West Vancouver. There have been many interesting articles written by members of the Society over the years. Some excellent speakers have been lined up for our general meetings this year. Our first one is 'City Reflections - Vancouver 1907 - 2007' on September 24^^ at the Senior's Centre. The presentation utilizes a film, discovered in Australia, taken on the front of a tram in 1907 Vancouver. It has been a great success wherever it has been shown. Be sure to attend if you are able. Jim Carter ♦♦♦♦♦♦ EDITORIAL YOUR READERSHIP - THE ULTIMATE COMPLIMENT One of the things of ultimate importance to any writer/editor is the enjoyment of the published product by its readers. As most of you know, the editing and publishing of West Vancouver Historical Society's publication every quarter is a volunteer role which I have held for the past year, and which I enjoy doing immensely. Getting each issue out on time and with interesting content is important, as the publication serves not only to inform and entertain our readers, but also to provide timely notice of our meetings and upcoming events, such as guest speakers at our General Meetings. But things do not always go according to plan. Although there are times when the mailing is a little late due to unforeseen circumstances and some of you have wondered when the next issue was coming, I want you to know that I appreciate your concern. That you watch for WVHS publication to arrive every quarter, and that you miss it when it is even just a couple of days late, is the ultimate compliment to any editor. I am delighted that the WVHS publication is awaited with anticipation, thank you for caring. Page 2 Cont'd. page three
