Advisory Committee - cont^d. redevelopment in the area. The Museum is now a central part of the potential changes that the strategy proposes for the future. The shift in focus to embrace the concept of a Museum that also preserves art does not exclude the importance of local history. It deals with the reality of limited space, the challenges of artifact based displays and the importance and historic relevance of art to this community. In the past the Museum has been operating on the basis of a Community Based Collections policy. This concept was to leave historically relevant objects in the homes of owners and call on them when needed for displays. Experience was that they were infrequently called upon for use. Therefore a change was endorsed by the MAC to abandon this concept and move.to a more focused approach and to actively collect in areas currently under represented which includes art by local makers. It was felt that this approach will strengthen the Museum's opportunity to relocate to the waterfront area when a new building is developed. These changes do not mean that the Museum is abandoning local history. However, with limited space and limited funding a focus needed to be developed which would allow for the preservation of a very important aspect of our community without requiring large sums for storage and display. The collection of visual art seems to provide that opportunity alongside a focused collection of artifacts. A collections committee will be established^next year. The exhibitions for next year are to include the following: Modern In Sight, the Architecture of Duncan McNab Selwyn Pullan: Positioning the New Expressions of Nature, the Art of Alistair Bell North Star; Lyle Wilson ♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦ The Passing of a Great Lady It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Membership Chairperson, Joan Skipper. Do You Want Electricity? The municipal council will very soon be able to tell whether the continued cry for electric light was a genuine demand or whether the rate-payers merely want the light but do not want to pay for it. Petitions have been placed in all stores for signatures of those householders willing to have the juice installed if the B.C. Electric Company bring their power into the municipality. On the expression obtained from these petitions will depend whether or not West Vancouver is to be illuminated in an up-to-date manner or continue in with its prehistoric illumination. The petitions are the result of a statement by the B.C.Electric Company that it would not meet the representatives of the council for further discussions of the subject until it was prepared to give some idea of what amount of power would be purchased by the residents. Of course, there are many residents who would be only too glad to have electric light but as they are only tenants, have no say in the matter. It is up to the property owners to make or mar the immediate future of the municipality for until we get an up-to-date lighting system we will never grow to the big things our natural advantages indicate we should. Some of the councilors were not inclined to approve of the tone of the B.C.Electric Company's letter but on the face of it, it seems reasonable that they should want some indication of what their returns are to be before they commit themselves and a petition open for signature by all houseowners seems an excellent way of securing an expression of opinion. If the returns from this method do not measure up to the expected it is likely that some of the enthusiasts among the council will undertake to make a canvas of the municipality, at any rate that has been suggested. AAH, those were the good old days when we had a choice or were they? ♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦ Page 7
