President's Message Our new computer has arrived and we are in the process of setting it up in new office space in the Gertrude Lawson Museum. We have taken over the majority of the space in the top floor lunch room. This will provide both the Museum and our Society with a larger meeting room. We may be able, in future, to hold some of our general meetings in the expanded space. We will be calling on volunteers to assist with the full implementation of the computer in the coming months. If you have computer skills please keep in mind our need for assistance once we have everything up and running. We are hoping to start using the computer to scan digital photographs for our records. As well, with e mail capability, we will be able to send the newsletter and other announcements to members with computer connections. One of the complications of moving is the need to secure an 'independient' phone line. We are in the process of determining the cost of new connections with a variety of service providers. Unfortunately we may be without phone service for a short while during the change over. The committee established to research the publication of a book to celebrate the West Vancouver Centennial is meeting regularly to move the project forward. (See Article on "The Picture History of West Vancouver Proposed as Centennial Project for 2012.) We are excited about our line up of speakers for the winter and spring. Elspeth Bradbury will be speaking about her book 'A View Through the Trees', a history of trees in West Vancouver at our January meeting. We then hope to follow at our next meetings with a talk on the history of fishing and stream rehabilitation in West Van and a history of Bands in West Van. Doreen Armitage, author of 'Tales From the Galley' has also volunteered to speak. Narrated by Mayor Pamela Goldsmith-Jones with music by the West Vancouver Youth Band, the film was created using scanned historic photographs donated to the Archives by the Hollyburn Heritage Society. The film traces the early beginnings of Hollyburn Lodge, built in 1927 from the dismantled ski camp on the Nasmyth Mill site on Hollyburn Ridge. Profiling many of the prominent events and personages who have been integral to the life of the Lodge, the film tells the story of its transfers of ownership, eventual privatization, and its need for repair. Marc Seifred of Channel 88 Media Group provided professional video production services to create a high quality work showcasing the importance of the Lodge to the local community, and as a West Vancouver landmark. Voiceovers by community members recount the personal significance of past experiences associated with the Lodge. The restoration of the Hollyburn Lodge has been identified as one of the District of West Vancouver's 2010 Olympic Legacy projects. Through this project, the District will attempt to raise nearly 1 million dollars to upgrade and preserve the building.
