Presidents Message The 2007/2008 Board has now been established. There are some new faces and some returning members. Peter Strelaeff is the new Vice President and I am the new President. Returning as Recording Secretary is Pam Friedrich and as Treasurer, Joan Cox. Ian Macdonald, our Past President, remains an active member of the Board. We are all looking forward to an active and productive year. An important milestone was reached at our last meeting when the board approved the purchase of a new computer for our office. Our choice was one with digital scanning capability as well as an updated operating system and Internet capability. The benefit to our society and to our members include the ability to scan digital photos for our newsletter and any other publications we may consider as well, it is our hope that we can place our membership list online. We also are aiming for a web site that will contain copies of all our newsletters and selected historic photos of West Vancouver. Ultimately we may be able to offer our newsletter online for those who prefer that method of delivery. Many changes will be needed to implement the full utilization of the new computer. Volunteers with computer skills will be sought in the near future. We have embarked on a project to begin to collect the oral history of the 1950's and 1960's. It became apparent in our idiscussions that while we should continue to collect oral histories from 'old timers' now was »the itime to gather the stories, information and’pictures from those who lived and worked in West Vancouver in the past two post war decades. Sometime in the future we will call for pictures and information from our members and the public. The Board continues to support the efforts of the Hollyburn Heritage Society to preserve Hollyburn Lodge. The Society has successfully secured a grant of $100,000 from the Olympic Legacy fund for the project. The challenge is for them to raise the additional funds necessary for successful preservation. There is a limited time until 2010 Olympics are held on the Mountain. It is their goal to complete the project before the opening ceremonies. We are all looking forward to the Christmas Party on Wednesday, December 12*^ at Spuraway Lodge. See you there. Jim Carter, President. Baker - 1997 A.S I am looking at our local mountains this year in early December, I am reminded of a year, I believe 1971 or 1972, when it snowed and snowed, perhaps 3 or 4 feet without exaggeration, in one week. The Chairlift was not running as the terminals and the machinery were snowed in , the old logging road was impassable and Hollyburn Trail was fragmented due to Chairlift Cut or the right of way for the lift. My husband and son Tom, who was were determined to get up to our cabin "Challenger Inn", so we decided to go via West Lake. We packed our packs with grub, ski boots and the usual stuff, of course our skies too and drove up the British Properties to the top road, Millstream Road. We broke trail in this beautiful, fluffy powder snow, which was very slow going. The trees were laden, just mounds of pristine snow. Finally we reached Westlake and it was closed. We stopped, put our ski boots and skies on, and started out over to First Lake, where our cabin was. It usually takes about half an hour to hike Cont'd. page three.
