An Interesting and Active Citizen - cont'd. An energetic, resourceful person, he can "turn his hand" to many things, and working along in his own quiet way every day of the week. As a retired Volunteer Fireman, Fred is a keen supporter of the West Vancouver Fire Services Museum and Archive Society, working with his son Rick; one of the founding members and a Director of that organization. Previously, Fred owned a hobby shop in the 14**^ and Marine Drive area. When Elizabeth was crowned Queen, Fred built a large crown and set it on the roof of the store on Marine Drive with many lights around it. He planned to use it in a planned parade, but the parade was rained out! Our loss of course, but West Vancouver is lucky to have residents such as Fred Titcomb in our midst. BEHIND THE WIRE The War Time Diary and Art of Robert Buckham November 6,2007 - February 9,2008 On a bombing raid over Germany on April 8, 1943 Captain Robert Buckham and the crew of his Wellington Mk.III bomber were downed near Dusseldorf. Miraculously, the entire crew survived, Buckham was eventually captured and imprisoned in the infamous prisoner of war camp Stalag Luft III in Sagan, Germany. In his elaborately illustrated war time diaries, Buckham recorded his internment, the trials of day today existence, the failed "great escape", popularized by the Hollywood movie and his eventual forced march to freedom through one of Europes coldest winters. Buckham hid his treasured books in old milk cans in order to preserve them during the three months he and over 10,000 other POWs endured a forced march in the dead of winter westward through Robert Buckham, Milk Can Percolator, circa 1942, watercolour and ink on paper.
