This arrangement continued into 1913, when a 2 room school was built at 13‘^ Street and Duchess Avenue and was named “Hollyburn Schoolâ€, and remains to this date, a very prominent elementary school. West Vancouver now a Municipality and experiencing considerable growth, received many complaints about the children having to travel such a distance to attend Hollyburn School, so a second 2 room school was built on 27^^ Street and named Dundarave School. Many years later this site became the Altamont Private Hospital and is now occupied by the West Vancouver Care Centre. During the construction of Dundarave School on 27*^ Street, classes were held temporarily at the then Conservative Hall on Marine Drive, between 24th and 25**» Streets. During that time their space was referred to as Dundarave School. This building later was occupied by Sager Maple Shop, and today remains a very active commercial development. Jones was the teacher. For reasons unknown this school closed in 1918 but reopened in 1920 and remains active. By 1921, a school had opened on the lower floor of a home in Whytecliff. This area also included what is now known as Horseshoe Bay. Miss Dorothy M. Jones transferred here following the closure of the Cypress Park School. 1921 also saw additions added to Hollyburn School. The Capilano Lumber Company built a 1 room school near the site of the present Cleveland Dam, where John R. Allan, was hired as teacher and construction began on Pauline Johnson School on 22“d Street at Inglewood. At this time, Mr. George Brealy held the position of Principal of Hollyburn School and Supervising Principal of all schools in the Municipality. 1923 welcomed the beginning of the first High (Cont’d. next column) The Beginning - cont’d. School in West Vancouver. This was a 2 room addition to Hollyburn School and Mr. Fred Patterson was appointed Principal. Prior to this students who continued on to high school had to travel to North Vancouver by train or into Vancouver by ferry to attend King Edward High School on 12*^ Avenue or King George High School on Burrard Street. The first West Vancouver High School Graduation Class in 1926 numbered 6 students. Two members of the teaching staff were to become prominent figures in later years. Tom Alsbury, who taught Commercial subjects, became the Mayor of Vancouver from 1959 to 1962 and James Sinclair, who taught Mathematics, became Minister of Fisheries and Oceans in the Federal Government. 1927 marked the opening of Inglewood High School with James R. Mitchell as Principal and an enrollment of 100 students. The Mathers Building was added to the campus in 1952. Ridgeview Elementary School was built in 1948 and that year the total enrollment in the West Vancouver School District was 1034 students. Dundarave School taken in Winter of 1921 Photo 1988. 499. By 1960 there were 7 new Elementary Schools opened: 1950 - Gleneagles and West Bay 1953 - Cedardale 1955 - Irwin Park 1956 â€" Westcot 1957 - Caulfeild 1958 â€" Glenmore Hillside Secondary was also opened in 1958 and the District student enrollment rose to 5300. The 1960’s saw the opening of Chartwell Elementary in 1967 and Eagle Harbour Elementary in 1966, Cypress Park was given a new building. Sentinel Secondary School opened in 1962. At the end of 1969, the enrollment was 9000 students and 392 teachers in the District. In 1977, Lions Bay Elementary School became the responsibility of the West Vancouver District.
