The boys have to wait.†There were 88 caddies at the Capilano Golf Course on Good Friday, and every one of them got out. A caddie is paid $1.00 for every round of eighteen holes. The boys, somewhat selfishly, complain that if the girls had not been there they could have got “doubles†or “two-loopsâ€. A “double†is carrying two bags, sometimes necessary when there is a shortage of caddies; a “two-loop†is getting out twice in one day. The girls are rotten caddies, said another vociferous male, “When some man is going to take a mean sweep with his number four they’ll see another girl about four fairways distant. Just as the man is all keyed up on his stroke they’ll yell. Hi, Mabel, and the poor guy’s game is ruined for the day.†They don’t keep their eye on the ball, either. If a bird flies past or an aeroplane shoot across the sky, they gaze after it. They lose more balls than enough.†What the boys grumble about most, however, is that the girls won’t take pins. Taking a pin is the act of lifting it from the cup and holding it while the party holes out. Not a very backbreaking job, but the boys are keen to see that each caddie in the party takes his fair share of pins.
