Page 3 Our Next General Meeting Is scheduled for Wednesday, September 27*, 2006 At 7:00 pm at The West Van Seniors’ Centre Speaker; Linda Aylsworth of Global TV. Topic: T.B.A. Board Loses Two, Gains Three We’ve just lost two fine board members, Hugh Johnston and Bud Langley. Both served long and well. Hugh is a long-time member of West Van Rotary, which club was instrumental in the founding of our society several decades ago. Bud graduated from West Van High over sixty yeai*s ago, and went from school straight into the navy. He survived the war and went on to marry an ex-May Queen, Dawn Smith. His main job with us was to find speakers for our general meetingsâ€"a job he did extremely well, as you will know if you attended those meetings. I must reveal to you that Hugh adopted West Vancouver as his own, and came to know its history and culture thoroughly. He is actually a West Ender, having attended Lord Roberts and King George schools. Both Hugh and Bud will be missed. Our gains are Jim Carter,Don Grant and Harvey Hill. I have known Jim for close to sixty years. In all that time he has always shown himself to be an exceptional person, both professionally and personally. He was originally a teacher (a remarkable one), and went on to be principal of West Vancouver Secondary School, and later, deputy superintendent of schools for British Columbia. Jim may well have been the best principal that West Van Secondary ever had. Teachers’ responses were consistently positive. He was fair, firm and confident and seemed to know what was going on in every comer of the school. Don, too, was a teacher and an administrator here in West Vancouver. I know that he also was exceptional, because he had my son and my wife in his orchestra at Community School. Don has also done much fine work with the Hollybum Heritage Society. One of his projects was collecting historical photographs for the society. Harvey has been very active as chairman or committee member of many Rotary Community Service Projects over the years, from Seniors Housing Projects to the "Quarry Lookout" Picnic area on the Cypress Bowl road. Most recently he was Chairman of this spring’s successful Rotary-Sponsored 10 K Charity Run from Park Royal to Dundarave and return. In the WVHS context, most significant is that he led the discussions with Mayor and Council, which eventually led to the incorporation of our Society. If we could find our missing Certificate of Incorporation that hung there until two years ago, you would note his signature at the top as Chairman. The Founding of the West Vancouver Historical Society In the winter of 1979 Harvey Hill, on assuming his term as President of the West Vancouver Rotary Club, appointed a committee to recommend a suitable Community Service project for the Club to undertake during his term of office. Rotarians serving on that committee were Thos. Erling-Tyrell, Hugh Johnston, Alan Stover, and Harvey Hill. Coincident with the committee’s discussions. Prominent Rotarian Rupert Hamson, upon his retirement as Municipal Clerk, had been appointed Municipal Archivist. Members of the committee met with Rupert in early December to assess the possible formation of a local Historical Society. It was envisioned that such a group could assist in collecting and recording the history of the community. The Rotary Club would
