Farms of Early West Van Settlers The early settlers of West Vancouver did not have easy the access to shopping centres, malls and super markets that we have today. Anything processed, canned or packaged had to come across Burrard Inlet in the earliest days by unscheduled boat and slightly later by ferry. The same was true of fruit and vegetables, and so it came naturally enough that most locals had at least small gardens in their yards, and some with larger yards or even a few acres developed small farms, orchards or raised a few animals and chickens. None of these were as large as were those developing on the Fraser River delta lands but by the early 1900’s there were several of them scattered through the community; some supplying vegetables, fruit and dairy products. There was a hay field at 12“^ and Inglewood, a holly farm nearby, a goat farm up IS*** Street and even a squab farm supplying those small, succulent birds to Vancouver restaurants. The Historical Society has decided to direct monies received from the West Vancouver Arts and Culture grant for the year 2005 to gather, preserve and present the history of some of these farms. Society director Carol Howie, a specialist in heritage research, will be doing the project. While she has a running start of fifteen or twenty farms, there is much information yet to be gathered. She would love to hear from anyone who has memories of these old properties. Locations of farms, the people who ran them, and, particularly, any pictures, would be much appreciated. When finished, the project will be turned over to the West Vancouver Archives and available there or on the website. If you can help Carol in her project, please write her care of the West Vancouver Historical Society. 750 â€" 15 Street, V7V 3T3, or phone her at 604-880-6630. Her email address is cazwaz@shaw.ca.
