3 I jlj^O.l W'‘2005 f t; M// â€"â€"â€"... ! The Newsletter_^Mhe West Vancouver Historical Society This issue concentrates oh'tlife muiseufn'S^ theme, which is transportation. Most a propos to it is the photograph of the three children of Everett Henderson Minions’, Mack, Ross and Norma. The emphasis can come off transportation for a moment and thus allow us to say something of these three West Van High graduates and charter members of the Soeiety. Mack was one of a group of the high school literati who in the fall of 1940 started up the school newspaper “The Westerlyâ€. Later he joined the RCNVR to serve his country in World War II. Still later he played basketball for Stacy’s (coached by Dick Wright). In 1947 the team defeated the “Cloverleafs†in an amazing upset. Norma Minions graduated from West Van High in 1941, one year ahead of her brother Mack. Five years earlier she was crowned the sixth May Queen at the annual May Day ceremonies at Ambleside Park. Her maids of honour were Barbara Edwards and Jessie Wrisberg, both of Inglewood Junior High School. On January 1, 1944, Norma became Mrs. Eddie Hamilton. The eldest of the three junior Minions was Ross, who graduated from West Van High in 1939. In his grade 12 year he served as a very effective student council president. Earlier, Ross belonged to the West Vancouver Youth Band with other luminaries, such as Jim McDonald, Rupert Harrison, Dick Lester and Jack Masterman. (This “pre-Arthur Delamont†band was led by Jack Condon and Arthur Jordan.) Hardly had Ross finished, when war broke out. He straightaway joined the R.C.A.F. and served his country well. My original intention was to show the Minions family seated in Byron Briton’s 1911 Willys- Overland touring car. I instead chose the photo you see here as it includes Byron himself. Not only did he supply both car and driver; he also supplied several large flat-bed trucks for elementary school floats and hired their drivers as well. Byron and Josie Briton’s North Shore Driving School is a corporate sponsor of the Historical Society. Few do as much to help us as do they, and we thank them. Here are the Minions, left to right: Ross, Norma, Mack and auto sup- plier and chauf- feur Byron Briton. It was a perfect Com- munity Day in all respects, es- pecially in the participants. We thank them all four.
