(1936) No law prevented bandits from having guns. They need these weapons very badly and so they get them. And they will go on getting them so long as they are manufactured. You and I don’t, brother, having each a pair of lusty legs and a voice to yell, “Help! Murder!†whenever anyone stops us in the dark to ask the time. Very, very few men can use a revolver accu- rately. I am willing to bet that the average man couldn’t shoot out one of his own windows while firing in the same room, if the salvation of his mortal soul depended on it. I knew a man who took a pot shot at the family cat because it had killed his canary, and naturally he smashed a valuable vase quite ten feet away. And did his wife make a few suitable remarks? You bet she did, knowing that, if he turned his revolver on her, she would be quite safe. And that’s just how it goes.
