Our Next General Meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 26th at the West Vancouver Seniors’ Centre This gathering, as is customary, will start at 7:00 p.m. What won’t be customary is that there may not be room for all those wanting to hear the speaker, as he is a man with whom many of our members have connected over the years. Again, w e thank Bud Langley for coming up with another in- teresting guest, this time in the person of Dr. Tom Calder. Here is a professional whose ministrations have been a godsend to many of us. Over the decades that he has lived in West Vancou- ver Dr. Tom Calder has demonstrated deep inter- est and commitment to the community. One of his major contributions has been the creation of the West Vancouver Adult Pops Band. (If he doesn’t blow his horn we will.) This band is widely and highly regarded, and is a regular feature of com- munity days and other public gatherings in West Van. Perhaps the most touching of the band’s con- tributions is its involvement each Christmas sea- son at the B.C. Schizophrenic Society’s annual ban- quet at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, which do- nates their hall for the occasion. Remember: Arrive early; seating is limited. PLACE NAMES OF WEST VANCOUVER A GAZETTEER IS the title of Peter Hall’s new geographical dictionary of West Vancouver’s neighbourhoods, streets, avenues, thor- oughfares, schools, parks, &c. This is a thoroughly interest- ing book; however, only 100 copies were printed, “hitting the stands’’ about a month ago. $15.00 is the price, and well worth it. Did you know that before West Vancouver’s incorporation (1912) there was a Gladstone Street, a Balfour Street, an Asquith Street and a Marr Road, and that these are now named Bellevue Avenue, Inglewood Avenue, Nelson Avenue and 25th Street respectively? These books are going fast. If you want one, call in at the museum between Noon and 4:30 pm from Tuesday to Sat- urday. But hurry, and avoid the scalpers who could well be found outside 680 17th Street demanding $25.00 for the book. (It would still be worth it.)
