HISTORY-ONICS Volume 23, No. 1 November 2005 The Newsletter of the West Vancouver Historical Society One of the most outstanding boys ever to attend schools in West Vancouver was Johnnie Hailstone (aka Terence Ramsay Hailstone). He had a dazzling sense of humour and a seemingly unending desire to please those he was with, when or where. His dad was Charlie Hailstone, sergeant of the West Vancouver Police department, later to become the chief. He joined the air force soon after graduating from West Van High. The following are extracted from “Glimpses of World War 11†and originated with the West Van News. Sept 16, 1943 Pilot Officer Terence R. Hailstone, R.C.A.F., son of Chief of Police C. Hailstone and Mrs. Hailstone, is spending a furlough at his home here. He recently received his wings at No. 7 S.F.T.S. at Macleod, Alberta. (WVN) Sept 21, 1944 P.O.T.R. Hailstone, son of Chief Constable and Mrs. C. Hailstone, was one of the pilots of a Sunderland flying boat which recently sank a German sub on the North Atlantic. The action took place while the Sunderland was on a regular daylight patrol, the sub diving to try to escape the bombs and depth charges. Later the sub’s bow appeared. Sept 21, 1944 P.O.T.R.
