Page 4 West Vancouver Historical Society May 2004 Inglewood Jottings The following news item was given us by Katie (Teed) Dickinson, who attended Inglewood at the time of Ian Brown’s tragic accident. You will note that the writer of the article gave Jimmy Mitchell a “promotionâ€, inasmuch as he was the principal of the school, and never superintendent. The Brown family were long in West Vancouver, living at the corner of 12"’ and Duchess and later at 2966 Marine Drive. Their plaque (Where is it now? It could have been u.sed at the recent WVHS/Hollyburn display at the museum) was a familiar adornment to the entry hall inside the front entrance of the school. (Nearby was a copy of Rembrandt’s The Man with the Golden Helmet.) But the school is gone now, as soon will most of our memories of it. While we have them, these memories matter: Katie’s future husband Bill won the Ian Brown Award in 1936, at the end of his Grade IX year, when he served as the Junior High School student council president (He had earlier taken the job over from Angus [Alan] Young when the latter had to retire owing to illness.) Other winners: Reid Mitchell (1941); Ralph White (1942); Rex DesBrisay (1944); Alan Fernie (1945). Here’s the article: Memorial Plaque Unveiled (West Van News, April, 1935) (Thanks to Katie Dickinson) The ceremony of unveiling the plaque honouring the memory of Ian Brown who was a pupil of the Inglewood High School at the time of his tragic death caused by a bicycle accident last September, took place in the school last Saturday at 3 o’clock. Superintendent James Mitchell in his opening remarks outlined the scholarship, which has been established by Mr. and Mrs. J. Stuart Brown and family to perpetuate the memory of their son, and invited Mrs. J. B. Leyland to unveil the beautiful bronze plaque which was covered by a silk Union Jack. Reverend Hillis Wright was present and dedicated the memorial, while Trustee Donald McTavish was most impressive in accepting the beautiful tablet on behalf of the board of school trustees. Pupils of Ian’s grade in school and friends of the family who had gathered to join in the ceremony stayed to admire the new bronze, which has been entirely constructed in Vancouver and is a masterpiece in design and appearance. It occupies a central position in the hall leading to the auditorium and is simply inscribed. The scholarship is incorporated in the tablet itself and takes the form of a medal surrounded by a wreath of laurel. The whole is cast bronze about a half inch thick and conveys the impression at once of chaste simplicity, beauty and permanence. It is indeed a handsome addition to the decorations of the building. November 23, 1933: Mr. J.B. Mathers has just sold fifteen acres on Mathers Avenue between 15th and 18th Street.
