Page 6 West Vancouver Historical Society March 2004 SPONSOR A TREE Enthusiastic finish at Closing Date Wednesday night, May 15th, saw the final sponsors adding their names to a campaign that will live in the history of West Vancouver as long as the municipality exists. The 2nd West Vancouver Boys Scout Troop set out to obtain spon- sors for 200 treesâ€"real sturdy 3-year old chesnutsâ€"to be planted on 17th Street. The response has been so gratifying that trees had also to be planted around Inglewood High School, Holly bum School and along a portion of 14th Street. Name tags are now being prepared and will be attached to the trees thereby enabling sponsors to pick out their own individual tree and watch it grow into a thing of beauty in this already beautiful municipality. The official ceremony of turning these trees over to the municipality will take place on May 24th as the parade is passing 17th Street. The parade will be halted and a few interesting moments will be presented the people. The 2nd West Van Boys Scouts wish to express their appreciation to the Minister of Lands, the Honorable Wells Gray, for the assistance and help so graciously given them by the minis- ter and his Forestry Department at the Green timbers Nurs- ery; to the Reeve and Council for the hearty co-operation and kind expressions towards the scouts; also to Mr. Duncan with his staff, who so readily assisted the boys. To the spon- sors of the trees the Troop can only say “thank youâ€, every- one,†and when the Mountain cabin is constructed, will ex- tend ^ hearty invitation to each friend who helped them so magnificently. -From the West Vancouver News, May 16, 1935 The article (Katie Dickinson reminded me of this) omitted to mention other events surrounding the planting of the chestnut trees. It was the Royal Jubilee of King George V; also, Lord Baden-Powell was making a visit to West Vancouver. A Priceless Programme Our thanks go out to Joan (Sheffield) Edwards of Cedar, B.C. (and formerly of 1450 21st Street, West Van) for send- ing along a 1929 programme by the Dundarave Ladies’ Choir, entitled “Grand Concert; A Night in the Orientâ€. This concert, which was under the direction of Mrs. F. X. Hodgson (The “X†stood for “Xavierâ€), was held in the Inglewood School Auditorium on Friday, Febmary 1st, 1929. The admission was 500; the proceeds went to provide equip- ment for the school gymnasium. In some future issue we’ll try to reproduce Joan’s pro- gramme. One of the pieces was entitled “Rhoda and Her Pagodaâ€. Praise Well-Placed I had a chat with a West Van Ancient at the Feb 20th John Lawson Park “Hollyburn†dedication about possible candi- dates for the Order of Canada. The name that sprang in- stantly to our minds-inspired certainly by his presence at the gatheringâ€"was Bas Collins. We could think of no one in the community who has done so much and of such valuable and varied kind as Bas. He has what is likely the largest private collection of West Van- couver memorabilia and artifacts in the muncipality. He has recorded on film and video more events than any other (as far as we could determine) working in several media. And we were completely in agreement on this one: his photo should be among those currently on display at the WVML.
