They tell vividly of the hard and often cruel lives of the light keepers. His Keepers of the Light and Lights of the Inside Passage will be his legacy. - Peter Hall SENATOR PAT CARNEY, DON GRAHAM Photo Courtesy of Peter Hall COMING EVENTS WEST VANCOUVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY NEXT GENERAL MEETING Thursday, November 26, 2003 at 7:00 pm At the Seniors’ Activity Centre, 695-2 P' Street West Vancouver Speaker: Hermann Knell Who will do readings from his recent book TO DESTROY A CITY All Visitors are Welcome DO NOT MISS THE NOVEMBER GENERAL MEETING Featured at the November meeting will be Hermann Knell, a West Vancouver resident and author of the recently published book To Destroy a City. The words on the dust jacket best characterize the book’s contents. “Hermann Knell was nineteen and living in Wurzburg in March of 1945 when hundreds of Allied planes arrived overhead, unleashing a torrent of bombs on the city. Wiirzburg’s tightly packed medieval housing exploded in a firestorm, killing six thousand people in one night and destroying 92 per cent of the city’s structures. Though Wurzburg had no strategic value, the city emerged from World War II second only to Dresden in material destruction inflicted from the air. Knell’s experience led him to years of research on the histoiy, development, and effects of the strategy ot area bombing. To Destroy a City is the result of the author’s investigation. His analysis of this form of warfare, which reached its zenith during World War II, covers the history and the redevelopment of wide-area bombing since 1914, examining the wartime effectiveness and the consequences. But the extra dimension that Knell’s book offers is his firsthand experience: the tension, fear, tentative defiance, and, finally, utter catastrophe of being on the receiving end of overwhelming air power.†The West Vancouver Historical Society Invites you To our annual Christmas Party At Spuraway Gardens, 235 Keith Road WV Thursday, December 11,2003 7:30 p.m. (See also page 6) If convenient, please bring some munchies (cheese and crackers, &c.) or some goodies (cakes, cookies, &c.)
