DONALD GRAHAM 1947 ~ 2003 Don Graham, historian, author, humanitarian, passionate defender of the importance of manned lighthouses and their keepers, and a director of this Society, passed away quietly on the morning of Wednesday, October 8‘^ He leaves behind his wife Elaine, and two sons, David and Jonathan. He was just 56. Don became a director of the West Vancouver Historical Society in 1993 and served continuously thereafter. He was instrumental in the creation of PALSâ€"the Point Atkinson Light Station Committeeâ€"as a Society subcommittee, whose objective wasâ€"and isâ€"to establish an interpretive centre at the light station. When others of us doubted that this goal would be achieved, it was Don who urged everyone on. We will eventually prevail! Don served at Point Atkinson for 17 years. Then the infamous destaffing program began, and Don was front and centre in fighting the removal of light keepers from their stations. His efforts finally resulted in the Minister calling a halt to the program. Don’s devotion to the cause illustrates Just how much he cared for the light keepers and all those who lived along B.C’s rugged and treacherous coastline. It was in recognition of these efforts and his work as an author that he received the Commemorative Medal for the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in February this year. One of Don’s contributions was as a consultant to Senator Pat Carney, who, with a Nova Scotia colleague, authored a Senate Bill to provide protection for heritage lighthouses. He must have been pleased to learn that the Senate recently passed the bill. (Continued on page 4)
