-'.^1 HISTORY-ONIGS SEP - S 2003 VOt^2l NO. 4 SEI^ISMBER 2003 THE NEWSLETTER OF THE WEST VANCOaVEFTHlSTORICAL SOCIETY AN UPDATE ON IRS: (The Land Under Lions Gate Bridge) Our speaker for the September meeting will be Tewanee Joseph, who is the Financial Officer for the Squamish Nation. On September 17th Mr. Joseph will talk about the IRS area. This area covers the Land Under the Lions Gate Bridge, and beyond, and those of you who travel that way will know that there have been, and still are, many changes taking place there. Large developments are at present under way and our speaker will make us aware of both past and present construction. Among the projects which he will cover are the new houses which have been built close to the Bridge and the new Children’s Kindergarten School, which is now under construction at the junction of Welch Street and the foot of Capilano Road. We shall also hear of the construction project which is taking place at Park Royal South - those of our members who live around Park Royal, both North and South, must be very conscious of the pile driving which has been carried out for some time! Not much has appeared in our local papers about what has actually been planned so it will be most interesting to hear what Mr. Joseph has to say. As well, Mr. Joseph will tell us of the history of the sacred land - the First Nations Burial Ground - on Keith Road. Finally, our talk will end with Mr. Joseph's summation of the impact of the 2010 Olympic Games, with emphasis on the anticipated use and future integration of the Squamish lands. +++++++++ PLEASE MAKE A NOTE ON YOUR CALENDAR of the date for our September General Meeting. Due to room booking problems at the West Vancouver Seniors' Activity Centre - they have more and more classes and meetings to fit into their space - vi'e have had to change our meeting night to an earlier date. TIME TO SAY FAREWELL By: Anne Vernon It is always difficult to say "goodbye", but ^ you will see from page 5, several changes have taken place in your board of directors; and now there are also going to be changes in your newsletter production team. After a good number of years of being involved with "History-Onics," I feel that it is time for me to retire from newsletter editing and go on to other, different, projects. My time with you has been challenging and uplifting, and it has been a joy to act as a filter to you all, through these columns, to be able to pass on your thoughts and experiences as you have either written them or told them to me. Over the years there have been so many people who have helped make your newsletter, I hope, a pleasure to receive five times a year. Especially, I would like to thank Peter Hall for his articles and his excellent proof-reading, which has saved me from many embarassments. Articles were also always made available, especially when I was in great need of items to fill in the space, by Hugh Johnston, Joel l^wson, Ian Macdonald, Joan Skipper, Tom Taylor, Museum & Archives staff and, of course, you, our readers, who often came through with ideas and letters. A new editorial team is presently forming and will, I am sure, take over most successfully. I wish them well and am certain that they will, as I have done in the past, rise to and enjoy the challenges of the future. +++++++++ What's Inside: Your President's Message 2 Capt.
