Holiybum School - Hundreds Celebrate the 90^^ Anniversary On Saturday May 24, hundreds of people gathered to celebrate Holiybum School and its 90 years at the heart of the Ambleside community. All in attendance agreed that the old place had never looked better and that their Holiybum years were among their very best. Thanks to the restoration project undertaken by the WV School Board, the school’s original building and the earliest additions were restored to their original craftsman style siding. The project manager, the carpenters and painters were dedicated to returning the school to its authentic heritage look - and succeeded on every front. Come round for a look. The heritage exterior belies the interior of the school. Holiybum students enjoy modem classrooms, a gymnasium, comprehensive library and computer labs - all in the school’s special atmosphere that only promises to get better with age. The current students prepared a “time line†of headline news capturing the leading international, national and local new stories over nine busy decades. Many visitors took the time to follow the time line as it wound its way throughout the school hallways. Many expressed their delight with the project reporting that it gave them a real the sense of “walking through timeâ€. It certainly was a reminder that much has happened over Hollybum’s 90 year history. Archival displays brought many smiles and some tears. Seeing themselves or their spouses or friends as feisty 5* graders in old class photos brought cries of delight and recognition. One woman found her late father’s art homework on display in the classroom dedicated to the 1930’s. She had never seen the work book before and never knew of his artistic talent. That was only one of many special moments that special afternoon. Between 400 and 600 guests are estimated to have attended the Anniversary Open House. Certainly the crowds poring over the display of a collection of 90 years of North Shore newspaper clippings was often 3-4 people deep. The event was especially memorable thanks to the tremendous efforts of current students and teachers as each classroom took on special projects to study and celebrate each of the 9 decades of Hollybum’s history. Hollybum’s history will also be celebrated at the West Vancouver Museum and Archives in September. For those of you who missed the fun in May - come out in September to celebrate West Vancouver’s oldest school. This article was contributed by Heather Tak, of the Holiybum Parents Advisory Council, 90th Anniversary Committee. What a lot of hard work and planning must have gone into this celebration, but obviously it brought joy to many people. Well done parents, staff and pupils. Holiybum is an extremely attractive and well-run member of West Vancouver School District #45 .
