Page 4 West Vancouver Historical Society September 2002 SOCIETY NEWS CURRENT AFFAIRS AND NBWS OF GENERAL INTEREST TO MEMBERS By: Laureen Jones Special Events Activities Director, Special Events Harmony Arts Festival Once again tiie month of August saw Uie ever- popular West Vancouver Harmony Arts Festival take place. As always, people from all around the Lower Mainland, and sometimes from even further afield, came to enjoy the many events which our community presents. West Vancouver is blessed with many resident artists and, apart from the displays of their works, there are tours of several artists' studios. We also have an extremely good Aits and Crafts fair and this, together witli much music, good food and various exhibits, make up the majority of the celebrations. The Ferry Building, being close to the popular sea wall walk, attracts many tJiousands of people to view die art on display. Also the Museum, although a little off the beatren track, receives many extia visitors who are always interested in their displays. Tlie Museum does sterling work all through the summer months by presenUng several different courses for children and it is good, when dropping into Gertrude Lawson House for any reason, to hear the cheerful chatter of the youngsters as they create dieir own works of art and take part in die varied programmes which our hard-working staliF put on for them. All in all, August is a very busy month for the tu dsdc part of our community and one which we all appreciate and support. mmmmmuwtmmKi s m Preben Mortensen, Archivist s IS â- â- R â- B â- Archives HRHRHRRB K West Vancouver m â- m Dave Barker had a sad announcement to make at die beginning of the AGM in May. He told us that Pieben Morlensen, who had been on sick leave for some months, had just died. Preben was our Arcliivist for only a few years, but during liis tenure he took die Ardiives into the 21st century, installing an excellent photographic and text system, thus making the finding of local inlormation easier for everyone. He was always there to guide and help the public, and especially Society members, in many ways. He is sadlv missed. Membership Report By: Joan Skipper Membership Chair HRRRHRRHHHRRRKBRBRRRRRRRRRRBRR Our memberships are now up to date except for a few which have lapsed. These people will no longer be receiving die news of our Society, wliich is a pity. Tlie lazy days of summer will soon have come and gone, with another busy Fall of meetings and volunteer activides coming up. Look forward to seeing you all at our meetings. More Society News The following items of news come to us from director Ian Macdonald. Thank you, Ian, for keeping us up-to-date on some perhaps not so well known "happeningsâ€. Joel Lawson, assistant planner for West Vancou- ver. has left to take a job in Washington. D.C. Many of you may not have known Joel. For the last ten years he was the staff liaison person for the Heritage Advisory Committee at City Hall. Several members of the Historical Society have served on dial committee and came to know Joel well. To all of us it became apparent diat he was not just doing a job but that he brought a deep personal respect tor our history and heritage to the table. He contributed his energy and endiusiasni to community affairs and we will miss liim. We have sent Joel off to Wasliington with a small gift, an honourary Society membership, and our best wishes for success in his new position. Ed Note: We shall mi.ss Joel. His was the guiding influence for the page 8 newsletter photographs and write-ups on houses and landscapes of special interest. It is hoped that Joel's successor will also supply us with further interesting articles about West Vancouver’s past history. Politicians Now Society Members Society Directors recently made a decision to bring our politicians aboard as honourary members. For years our Mayor and Councillors have received "History-Onics" and now Member of Parliament John Reynolds and M.L.A.s Ted Nebbling and Ralph Sultan will be kept up to date on our affairs. In years past we have not found reason to work directly with federal and provincial politicians, but with such projects as Point Atkinson. Holiyburn Lodge renewal, and Lion's Gate Bridge dedication all moving at a bcaurocratic snail's pace, wlio knows when we may knock on their doors.
