By; Dave Barker This year 1 made die Annual Report at the Annual General Meeting verbally, rather than in the May issue of History-onics. For tliose who were unable to attend that meeting the main points follow "We have had a very busy year since last July. The world as we know it has changed. 2001 will go down in history as the beginning of a new era in the behaviour of man. The West Vancouver Historical Society has been busy. We have seen our participation in the historical life of our community grow. Among other things we have supported, financially, the new kiosk in John iMWSon Park. As a result we now have a place for notices of our General Meetings and their speakers, and to publicize historical sites and events in the community. We are encouraging the general public to come to those meetings. As well, we have purchased a marker for the grave of Charles Nelson, West Vancouver’s first Reeve. We have continued our support of the preservation of the Point Atkinson Lighthouse. We have called for the designation of the Lions Gate Bridge as an historic site. We are supporting the preservation of the Royal Hudson steam locomotive by the West Coast RaUway Association. We have attempted to bring in guest speakers to our general meetings that reflect a broad range of interests - we have looked at the history of Howe Sound and Burrard Inlet, the birth of Jazz, the story of the Point Atkinson Lighthouse, and the history of the Girl Guides on the North Shore. And, above all, we have supported financially and spiritually, the West Vancouver Museum and Archives. To continue to do this, we need your support. We need a membership that is involved and growing. Your interest is demonstrated by your attendance at meet- ings such as this. Unfortunately, in the last few years some members have chosen not to renew their membership. We need to spread the word, especially to the younger members of the community. A gift of a membership in the Historical Society is an excellent little extra to both the individual and the community. are the creation of our membership. The West Vancouver Historical Society has a role to play in this community and it is up to its members to ensure that it fulfills its mandate." Welcome back to another season of West Vancouver Society meetings. As you ctm see from page 1, future meetings are going to be held in the Audio Visual Room of the West Vancouver Seniors’ Activity Centre, and tJie dates for the rest of this year are as follows: 25th September, and 27th November, at 7:00 p.m. Remember, our meetings are open to the general public, so do bring friends along if you wish. We are always delighted to meet people who care about our heritage.
