Darryl will describe for us many aspects of this 'first-time ever" project. As most of us know, the existing bridge was kept open to heavy traffic, during daylight hours, whilst extensive renovation works took place, and this presented a major lechnical challenge to everyone involved. On September 25tli he will share his extensive background information with us and tell of iJie challenges which he and all involved in the work have had to meet. The Bridge, wiiich is 846m (or 2778 feet) long carries 70,000 veliicles every day. Quite a load for a structure wliich was built in 1938, when traffic was much lighter in botli numbers and weight. The increased demands of the 20th/21st cenmry meant Uie bridge capacity had somehow to be increased. Therefore the Province of British Columbia retained Buckland & Taylor Ltd. to carry out this massive Renewal. The design was completed in December 1998 and consfjucfion was essentially completed by September 2001. What a feat! Come and hear more about it on September 25, 2002. The Next General Meeting Wiil be held on Wednesday September 25th, 2002, at 7:00 pm in the Audio Visual Room of the West Vancouver Seniors' Activity Cenue, 685-21 st Su eet (pai'king off Fulton Avenue, between 21st and 22nd Streets).
