Themes of culture, heritage, textile art and women’s history are explored in the exhibition through presentation of hand-woven coverlets, textile tools and materials and period photo- graphs. Preserved in Norway’s isolated farming communities, many age-old textile forms and practices continued in daily use well into the 20'** Century. The traditional textiles of Norway resonate with motifs from the Renaissance and ttie Middle Ages, and the textile techniques used in their manufacture provide a unique opportunity to appreciate skills that were once universal to women in western society. Woven Treasure: The Coverlets of Norway runs from July 31 - October 26, 2002. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday, i 1:00 am to 5:00 pm m the summer and Tuesday through Saturday, i 2:00 noon to 4:30 pm after the Labour Day weekend. The exliibit is presented as part of Convergence 2002, an international liber arts conference in Vancouver, BC, August 1-4,2002, hosted by the Greater Vancouver Weavers’ and Spiimers’ Guild and sponsored by tlie Handweavers Guild of America.
