Page 4 West Vancouver Historical Society March 2002 SOCIETY NEWS CURRENT AFFAIRS AND NEWS OF GENERAL INTEREST TO MPMRFR^ Special Events Activities By: Lcmreen Jones Director, Special Events Membership Report Heritage Week - February 18 - 24, 2002. Once again the week held many heritage activities, with several different displays and events every day. Photographis of bygone years in West Vancouver were on show at the Ferry Building and the Memorial Library: a lea at the Silk Purse honoured early members of the W.V. Community Arts Council: a talk and video show called "Hollyburn, A Place .of Memories", remembering the fun and games which were to be had every weekend, was popuhir. The Hollyburn Heritage Society can sell you a copy of the video for $15.00 - contact Bob Tapp at 604-926-3748 or lola Knight at 604-922-7358: the annual free Bar-B-Q and Snow Shoe event at Cypress Bowl was so popular that they put it on for iw'o days this year - botli fully booked! There was lots of music and lots of shared memories when old friends met at many of the "heritage happenings". All in all. West Vancouver is a good place to be in February each year, when we celebrate tilings past and look forward to things to come. On the last day of the celebrations - Saturday, 23rd of February, 2002, a ceremony was held to honour those among us who have made an extra effort to preserve our parks and buildings, or, like Bas Collins, collected much material which will give future generations a living picture of their forefathers way of life. See the opposite column for more details. Carolanne Reynolds is a WVHS member and Presi- dent of the North Shore Heritage Committee. This commit- tee participates in Heritage Week, Heritage Weekend, the Award reception, and some heritage events during the year, such as a tea for the Queen Motlier's birthday - she will be 102 this August!! Carolanne also plays a leading role in our community and often attends the West Vancouver Council meetings. She jogs our memories, reminding us that 2002 is a very .special year for West Vancouver. By: Joan Skipper Membership Chair We have one new member since our last newsletter and she is Dorotliy Mehaffey from Olympia, Washington. Membership renewals are coming in very slowly and we would remind members that their annual fees are due on 1st January, 2002. Tlie low cost of the membership includes a subscrip- tion to "History-Onics", with news of current events and up- to-date happenings in West Vancouver, compiled completely by volunteers. 2002 West Vancouver Heritage Aw'ards At a ceremony held in the West Vancouver Museum & Archives at Gertrude Lawson House, on Saturday, February 23rd, 2002, tlie following people received awards for their efforts in preserving heritage buildings, or advocating heritage awareness in our community: Helen Babalos, owner and Erika Gerson, Gersonae Arch., for the sensitive renovations and additions to the Babalos home on Haywood Avenue, designed to preserve and enhance the existing streetscape and neighbourhood character. Edward Cook & Maureen Palfreyinan, owners, and Jeff Keate, Syntliesis Design for maintaining the original character of this rare Streamlines Moderne style hoiuse at 3688 Marine Drive during an extensive renovation process. Kim Smith and Bo Hellliwell, Helliwell -i- Smith, Blue Sky Arcitects, designers and owners, for a sensitive renova- tion of the 1964 house and landscaping at 4090 Bayridge Avenue, designed by Barry Downs of the firm of Hollingsworth & Downs, Architects. Mark Scott and Chris Ballingall, owners, and Brian Hemmingway, architect for work carried out on the old Stegeman residence. (See page 8 for more detail). YES, OUR 90TH YEAR AS AN INDEPENDENT COMMUNITY! B,.. Carolanne Reynolds Plans are afoot for a tea to celebrate Queen Elizabeth's fiftieth year on the tlirone. And surely we are going to celebrate our own anniversary - nothing finali.sed as yet, but wait and see! Gleneagles Golf Course will be celebrating its 75th anniver- sary this year and West Vancouver High School celebrate tlieir 75th year in 2003. Other dates ol interest, all of which took place in 1912: February 27 - Uie Legislature approved our bill to incorporate Letter Patent for Incorporation (aka Chaaricr) issued March 12: Royal Assent given on March 15. Our first Election was held on April 6 and first Council meeting on April 8. (Tliis was on Easier Monday, so after sweiiring in, the meeting was adjourned to the next day - Tuesday, April 9 at 4 p.m. The meeting was held in the school house, which was a large tent. {Various dates have been quoted by vttnous people, but the ones quoted above have been checked with W.V Community Archives). No lime was wasted then! So when should we have our birthday bash'.^ How about Community Day in West Vancou- ’ T, or maybe even Canada Day! We will keep you posted.
