HISTORY-ONICS VOL.20 N0.1 JANUARY 2002 THE NEWSLETTER OF THE WEST VANCOUVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY COME SWING WITH US INTO THE NEW YEARI Ron MacQueen brings us - the Roots of Dixieland Jazz Ron MacQueen is neither an historian nor a musician. Rather, he is a retired secondary school phys- ics teacher with a passion for Dixieland jazz. Ron taught in West Vancouver for 30 years, 28 of them at West Vancouver Secondary before retiring seven years ago. About 15 years ago he and his wife Marion attended the TerrifVic Dixieland Jazz Party in Victoria and so began their love affair with Dixieland. For the past 10 years they have been involved in Vancouver's own Dixieland festival, 8 of them as festival directors. They also founded the Vancouver Dixieland Jazz Society which currently boasts over 250 members from B..C., Alberta, Washington and Oregon. When not working organizing their own festival, Ron and Marion travel widely in their motor home to other festivals all over North America, birding along the way. Ron will draw upon his experience and collection of recorded music to trace the musical ingredients that went into the pot as jazz was being cooked up in New Orleans during the first part of the past century, illustrating the various styles of playing that developed.
