Do bring a flashlight to hellp light your way. Everyone who cares about history, and supports its preservation, is aware that funding for such things has been cut down in these days of "belt-tightening". What can we, as individuals, do to help? Well, just by reading this newsletter you are already doing something! You support the West Van Historical Society and your Society, in turn, gives both material and financial support to the West Vancouver Museum & Archives. The staff there do a great deal of hard work in preserving much of West Vancouver's past; collating photographs, written and oral records and artifacts. They present the exhibits and help those interested in checking out information in the Archives. (Appointments required please as no full-time staff is available yet). One of the most imprtant parts which our M & A people play in the community is the preparation and presentation of wonderful school programmes. After all, if they catch the interest of the young, future historians may very well be hatching! Susan and Andrew were deeply involved in previous programmes and Greg is carrying on the tradition. Under his auspices a new in-house programme is underway entitled "Let's Look: Tools for Seeing and Art Making". The programme is designed for Grade 4 students, but can be adapted for students in Grades 3 and 5. Those participating are sure to be fascinated by the new horizons which will open up before them. Understanding perspective can be hard to grasp when you are young, but "Let's Look" offers a fun approach to foreshortening, vanishing points and overlapping, all of which have puzzled past generations of budding artists. Under Greg's guidance, simple clues will will help students to present real (3-dimensional) objects on paper (the 2-dimensional plane). Classes will also get a chance to see a wide range of local, Canadian and international art from many different cultures and historical periods. Sounds wonderful. If you have children or grandchildren in the age categories mentioned do please encourage their teachers to take part. The Museum Gallery is in need of volunteers to work as Gallery Guides during open hours. This job requires people who are enthusiastic about the history of West Vancouver and do not mind taking the time to answer questions about West Van heritage or museum exhibits. The Gallery Guide also collects admission. It is the perfect volunteer position for Historical Sociey Members - so if you have a few hours per week to spare give Ian a call at 604-925-7179.
