HISTORY-OMCS THE NEWSLETTER^ THE WEST VANCOUVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY VOL.19 NO. 4 SEPTEMBER 2001 OUT OF THE PAST AND INTO THE PRESENT: THE HISTORIAN'S ROLE IN THE COMMUNITY In philosophical moments we in the Historical Society sometimes dwell on questions: "What is history? What does it mean to people? What can an active and dedicated historical society do to benefit a community and the people in it?" Our speaker on September 27th will answer some of these questions and he is uniquely qualified to do so. A long-time resident. Rod Day is well known in West Vancouver as an active community worker. He has recently retired from Simon Fraser University, where he taught history for 37 years. Over the course of his teaching caieer. Rod has published two books and many articles, paiticularly in Fmnch histoiy. During his ten years as a member of West Vancouver Council, Rod specialised in planning, encouraging good design in building forms and the beautification of the community. Opposed to monster houses and urban sprawl, committed to pedestrian oriented activities and the preservation of green spaces, he obtained several zoning changes lessening the impact of the house on the site, worked to have the land above the Upper Levels Highway declared a development permit area, and was instrumental in the creation of the Caulfeild heritage zone. He was also active in the extension of the seawalk to Dundarave Park, the acquisition of waterfront land from 13th to 18th Sheets, and the creation of new waterfront paiks.
