Thereafter and through the post-war years Westcoast Modem design featured post and beam construction, flat roofs, lots of glass (for the views) and generous overhangs (for the rain). The terrain of West Vancouver lent itself to this styling. The views, forests, rock outcroppings, and sometimes steep slopes, challenged the architects and builders of the day. As a result our community is as representative as any place in the world of this classic style of architecture and the Binning house is the beginning and the inspiration for literarily hundreds of houses in West Vancouver. Mrs Jessie Binning still lives in the house which she and her husband built in 1941. With the help of long-time fiiend, and noted architect, Arthur Erikson, she unveiled the plaque which denotes her home as a National Historical Site. Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence Society Director, Barry Lindahl, was unable to attend the Society's May Board Meeting. It turned out that he was in Ottawa that evening accepting an award from Prime Minister Jean Chretien! The editor e-mailed Bar^y with congratulations and suggested that perhaps a short article on the experience, together with a photograph, would be most welcome in this edition of "His-tory-Onics". His reply was - "Thank you very much. It was an unexpected honour. I believe however that I'd like to return to my anonymous little nook as soon as possible. I feel I do a decent job in the classroom. There are days, however, when I feel anything but an award winner. Another article will just prolong my stay in a spotlight that is both too bright and too warm. The award has been going on for eight years. B.C. teachers have been winning every year for those eight years. This year three B.C. teachers were honoured." Well, Barry', no photograph and no article, but we couldn't ignore you entirely. Do forgive us for letting your fellow Society members, who do not have access to local papers, know of the well-deserved honour which Canada has bestowed upon you. On their behalf, may I offer you our heartiest congratulations. Annual Report Special Thanks (Contd. from page 2) Directors wish to aknowledge three people who continue to give time and effort to the society - Laureen Jones in Special Events and Joan Skipper and Susan Dirassar in Membership. Thank you very much for your hard work and dedication.
