VOL. 19 NO. 1 FEBRUARY 2001 HISTORY-ONICS THE NEWSLETTER OF THE WEST VTfNUOUVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY HORSESHOE BAY THEN AND NOW; And What of The Future? have two speakers for our February 28th general meeting. Both are Horseshoe Bay residents who have been, and are still, deeply involved in community matters. Dan Sewell, grandson of the founder of Sewell's Marina in Horseshoe Bay over 70 years ago, will tell us how evolution has kept the family tradition alive; of pioneering days in Horshoe Bay, the celebrities of Vaudeville and the people who created the community. He will also cover the effect the war, the growth of urban sprawl, the evolution of aluminum and fibreglass boats have had. The Sewell family experiences cover many different aspects of coastal life - hotel operations, marina development, boat sales, restaurant development, the Queen Charlotte Island operations and even a brief voyage to the Solomon Island of the South Pacific. John Moonen, who shares the evening with Dan, will cover some of the aspects of the present-day difficulties the community is experiencing. The proposals include expansion of the B.C. Ferry dock, erection of large maintenance and administration facilities, the elevation of roads and provision for 12 lanes of traffic uphill from the current terminal and alongside the Village, the removal of thousands of cubic meters of rock from the side of the Bay,plus a new parkade. These will for ever change the Bay community, not to mention the problems caused to the local schools by such wide-reaching changes. John tells us of steps being taken by local residents, the organisations they have formed and of West Vancouver District Council's involvement to try to control this enormous expansion. Do come and join us if you can - this is an important matter and should make for a very intresling evening.
