EXECUTIVE REPORT: It has been a very quiet summer as far as your Board of Directors is concerned, with everyone going off in all directions and re-charging their batteries for the coming Historical Society year. Lots of work goes on behind the scenes throughout the months from September to June - co-ordinating our efforts to preserve and cherish our natural habitat - Point Atkinson and Lighthouse Park being one of the projects we are trying to protect: choosing subjects and speakers for the society's public meetings take up a good deal of time, and the general day-to-day running of the organisation means that the members of the Board all do a great deal of work. We should be back to normal once Labour Day has gone and the November newsletter will keep you up to date with events. :fc :<c 4: 4: :|c 4: THE FUTURE OF THE ARTS IN WEST VANCOUVER Oksana Dexter, who oversees almost everything in West Vancouver's cultural life, spoke about the decisions and progress which have been made in our community over the past two years, Oksana spoke at our June meeting (Ed Note: Apologies for the misspelling of your name in the last newsletter edition Oksana -1 should have double-checked!) When she first came to West Vancouver, Oksana was asked to make a complete review of the cultural services and existing plans which were then in effect in our community. Her ensuing Cultural Services Operational Plan was adopted by the West Vancouver Council on 19th April, 1999, which means that Council, on behalf of all West Vancouverites, averred their commitment to the support of our Cultural Services. All future planning must conform to the decisions made at that time - surely a safeguard for our ftitural artistic development. Oksana then covered the main West Vancouver cultural events which she called "The Three Jewels In West Vancouver's Crown". First came the Ferry Building - one of the most popular art galleries in the Lower Mainland, visited by 55,000 - 56,000 people each year - surely an incredible number. Then there is the "Harmony Arts Festival" - our 10 day celebration of art and music, encouraging the recognition of local artists, and including visits to several of their studios which gives many people their first chance to see (Contd. on page 3) CORPORATE MEMBERS We gratefully acknowledge the support of our Corporate Members whose names appear here in order of joining Chapman Land Surveying Ltd.
