Page 4 West Vancouver Historical Society April 2000 SOCIETY NEWS CAIRRENT AFFAIRS AND NEWS OF GENERAL INTEREST TO MEMBERS Special Events Activities By: Laureen Jones Director, Special Events COMMUNITY DAY SATURDAY, JUNE 3rd, 2000 The Community Day theme this year is ’•Blastoff’ The hours are 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM PROGRAM: 9:45 AM Master's Mile Run 10:00 AM Parade begins at 13th and Marine Drive, proceeds to 22nd Street, where the Parade will disperse at 12:00 Noon 10:00 AM Both the Community Centre and the -4:00 PM Senior's Centre have festivities and crafts, both indoor and out. The Seniors' Centre is situated at the North-West comer of 21st Street and Marine Drive. Our Society display will be in the Fabric Arts Room at the Senior's Activity Centre. This is a smaller rooom than usual but we have planned an attractive new panel set-up to fit in. We hope to see Byron and Josie Briton as our entry in the parade, driving their heritage Overland, and proudly displaying our banner. We also hope the weather man will "Blast Off' the rain and give us a pleasant sunny day. Happy Community Day! A WELL-EARNED HONOUR It is with great pleasure that we announce that your hard-working Special Events Editor, Laureen Jones, won a West Vancouver Heritage Achievement Award in appreciation of her many years of dedication. Well done, Laureen. Membership Report By: Joan Skipper Membership Chair Most of our memberships have been renewed for this year, but there are still a few outstanding. We have sent out reminders that membership fees became due from January 1st of this year. We shall announce at the AGM that newsletter mailing will be discontinued to those whose memberships have not been renewed. Many thanks to all of you who have already sent your membership dues in to us. Patterson 1999 Heritage Achievement Awards On Saturday, February 26, 2000, three Historical Society members were honored for their contributions to West Vancouver heritage at the annual Heritage Achievement Awards Ceremony at Gertrude Lawson House. Acting-Mayor Bill Soprovich presented Awards of Excellence to, among others, director Laureen Jones and Past-President Jack Leyland. (Jack was out of town and unable to accept his personally). The Acting-Mayor paid tribute to both Laureen Jones, for "her efforts in raising awareness of the community's heritage. In particular she is responsible for preparing the Historical Society displays, including the heritage information booth displays in Ambleside Park during the North shore Heritage Weekend in September": and to Jack Leyland "for a life-time of involvement in heritage initiatives in West Vancouver. In particular, he was a leader in the successful efforts to save and preserve both the Ferry Building and Gertrude Lawson House which are now both considered essential parts of the community's arts and heritage fabric." Heinz Berger was honoured for his six ‘ years of service as a member of the Heritage Advisory Commission with the presentation of a Certificate expressing the Municipality's appreciation.
