February 2000 West Vancouver Historical Society Page 3 Visions of the North Shore, a Millennium Project By: Anne Vernon & Helen Davies As you may have read in the newspapers last November, the three North Shore municipalities - North Vancouver City, West Vancouver and the District of North Van - received a grant from the Federal Government for special projects to celebrate the millennium. Titled "Visions of the North Shore," the project will add to the growing interest in our local history . The millennium was fast approaching when the North Shore Museum and Art Council personnel decided that if they were going to spark federal government interest in a local millennium project they should all work together to present a total community plan. So began a tremendous amount of planning and work, which resulted in the three municipalities receiving a grant of $288,575 from the federal government through the Canada Millennium Partnership Program (CMPP). CMPP funds up to one third of the eligible costs of millennium projects, with local government, community and private organizations joining together to also support these local initiatives. As envisioned by the planning committee, the project will "embrace the new millennium through a heritage and visual arts collaboration celebrating twelve sites that have historic, natural and cultural significance to the North Shore." Twelve print artists will create original art work capturing each of the sites. At each site there will be an interpretive display which will include archival photos and a story documenting the historical significance of the sites. West Vancouver sites include, Ambleside Park, John Lawson Park, the Dundarave Pier and Horseshoe Bay. Along with the interpretive displays, there will be museum and visual arts exhibitions, school programs, a commemorative publication and a CD ROM. Visions ofthe North Shore was jointly developed by a coalition of organizations and citizens involved in arts, heritage and cultural initiatives across the North Shore. The North Shore Community Arts Council is the sponsoring agency. Representing West Vancouver on the steering committee is Co-chair Oksanna Dexter, Cultural Services Superintendent for the District of West Vancouver, and committee member Deborah Tuyttens, Curator for the West Vancouver Museum. Well done to you both and thanks for your hard work! For more information on the West Vancouver projects, please phone Deborah Tuyttens at 925-7295.
