'Sl'ta 1 s ^ VOL. 18 NO. 1 tUARY 2000 HISTORY-ONI^ THE NEWSLETTER OF THE WEST VANCOUVER HISTORICAL SOCIETY "Mapping the Past" Feature Presentation: Author Derek Hayes The Historical Atlas of British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest is a unique and stunning new perspective on the history of British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest. It Is a history of British Columbia illustrated with maps. For the first time, many historical maps of British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest have been gathered together in a single book, creating an atlas of antique maps that tell a continuing story of the expanding frontier of knowledge about the region. Derek Hayes, author of the recently published and critically acclaimed Historical Atlas of British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest, and past West Vancouver resident, will make a slide presentation. The presentation will trace the development of mapping In the Pacific Northwest from a time when, during the sixteenth century, little was known about the region, to the explorations of Captain George Vancouver who travelled along the Pacific coast and surveyed the region extensively. Along with slides of historical maps drawn by explorers of the Pacific Northwest, there will also be slides of maps that were imaginative depictions of the Northwest Passage, the Sea of the West, and imaginary islands! Derek will also show us a number of Spanish maps, as well as the maps of James Cook, George Vancouver and many others. The Historical Atlas of British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest is available at bookstores everywhere, and copies will also be available at our meeting.
