Page 8 West Vancouver Historical Society February 2000 Life Was Wonderful (Con'tfromp. 7) We... roller-skated on the main road, Marine Drive, rarely having to move over to allow cars to pass. We knew where the best vine maples grew for swinging on the slender trunks and the tallest and bushiest cedars to play ship's lookout, the largest ferns for spear fights and the best crop of wild blackberries along the old PGE Rail right-of-way. We also knew the secret hiding places of the most delicate wildflowers and the now almost extinct "monkey-moss." We were a tree-climbing, rock-hopping, log-jumping, water-loving, beny-picking, healthy, skinny lot, tanned by the hot sun. Travelling over to Vancouver city was an exciting event. Scrubbed and shiny, we rode to Ambleside on the Blue Bus (10 cents) to board the commuter feny (10 cents) for the one-half hour trip to the foot of Columbia Street. The only ferry that is still around, I believe, is the Bonabelle, now used as an excursion boat. I recall the time a contest was held at our elementary school in the 30's to name this new ferry. The prize of $5.00, a goodly sum in those hard times, was won by Bonabelle Barbour.
