Page 4 West Vancouver Historical Society November 1999 SOCIETY NEWS CURRENT AFFAIRS AND NBA/S OF GENERAL INTEREST TO MEMBERS Special Events Activities By: Laureen Jones Director, Special Events Heritage Weekend: Sept. 18 8c 19, 1999. Beautiful sunny days were perfect for the Scx^iety booth at Ambleside. Sponsors for the event were the Heritage Advisory Commission, the Museum & Archives ,the Historical Society, and the North Shore Heritage C ommittee. They all helped promote understanding of the history and growth of West Vancouver. The exhibit was in 2 tents on the lawn beside the Ferry Building. Our display of historic photographs, packaged notecards, decals, numerous brochures, newsletters, information sheets and books on West Vancouver's history, interested and impressed our many visitors: 200 on Saturday and 400 on Sunday! Other events which took place during this special weekend were the Heritage Home Tour - a tour of the North Shore's most distinguished heritage houses: the Lighthouse Park Nature Walking Tour - a very popular nature walk with Elaine Graham, who is the resident expert on the flora and fauna of Lighthouse Park: the Point Atkinson Lighthouse Tour - an interesting look at the Point Atkinson Light Station, directed by Donald Graham, who also discussed the long-term plans for the site: and the West Van Tree Walking Tour - a very interesting and informative walking tour by Heinz Berger, former Parks Manager. (This tour covers the lower Ambleside/Dundarave area and their significant landscape features.) Each of the tours were well supported and enjoyed by the many who participated. Inspired, I wrote an appreciation of my friend Mary Chapman's life, which appeared in the April 1998 History-Onics issue, just after she had received her Heritage Award. I did not meet Mary until the Memory Cruise on the ferry "Hollybum". At that time I was a new member and, as it was raining heavily, I stayed inside and strolled around, stopping when I came across a table of pictures, brochures, etc. A most amiable lady introduced herself as "Mary Chapman". From that day on we found mutual interests and time to chat about the Society, the Museum and, especially, the Archives. I always admired Mary's many talents and can only add - "We will miss you, Mary". Membership Report By: Joan Skipper Membership Chair Just a reminder ... MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL IS DUE January 1st, 2000. Dues can be mailed to 680-17th Street, West Vancouver, V7V 3T2. Mary Chapman spent her early years in West Vancouver, growing up in a house at Ambleside, just west of the Ferry Building She often spoke of running for the ferry as it arrived at the dock, so that she would be in time for her job in Vancouver. A "leading light" in the archives, Mary arrived by bus from North Vancouver to volunteer 5-6 hours several days a week. Mary started her "workroom report" column in History-Onics, covering various West Vancouver topics . I remember Mary saying that "archives conjures in one's mind's eye - shelves filled with dusty junk from the past, until one spends a few hours elbow deep in boxes of dusty material that face you and the magic begins. A brochure, letters, photos, etc., and all your own memories that have been locked away in the deepest comer of your brain seem to come alive." We need to record the memories of those who grew up here, remembering when West Van. was really a summer resort. We will miss Mary. She left us many written memories - a great legacy for us all. The next issue of History-Onics will not be with you until the month of February - not only in a New Year, but in a new century! The Editor and all the many volunteers of the team who produce and mail out the newsletter would like to wish you all A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A WONDERFUL TIME IN THE COMING YEAR of 2000!
