EXECUTIVE REPORT: By: Helen Davies With the support of the West Vancouver Heritage Commission, the Historical Society Board decided that, given the historical significance of the Lion's Gate Bridge, we would recommend that the Canadian Department of Heritage designate the bridge as a National Historic Site. What follows is a copy of the Board's letter. To Whom it May Concern I am writing on behalf of the West Vancouver Historical Society to convey the Society's interest in nominating the Lions Gate Bridge to be designated as a National Historic Site. The completion of the "engineering marvel" in the Autumn of 1938 was a great transforming circumstance for our community, affecting every facet of life in West Vancouver. Many of our long-term residents continue to refer to themselves and their times as "before the bridge." Together wifh the lighthouse at Point Atkinson (designated a National Historic Site in 1995), the Lions Gate Bridge constitutes the definitive international image of Vancouver, a silhouette enhanced by the arrangement of lights installed to mark the celebration of EXPO in 1986. Recently, the future of the bridge has become the focus of considerable public debate arising from the need to upgrade and expand a vital commuter link. We wish to emphasize that as a Society concerned above all with our local heritage, we seek National Historic Site status for the Lions Gate Bridge purely as a commemorative gesture. Yours Sincerely, Helen Davies, President West Vancouver Historical Society A note from the Editor Congratulations to our President, Helen Davies, who received her Doctorate in Canadian History from the University of Manitoba in October. Her dissertation was on the Centennial celebrations of 1987, titled: The Politics of Participation; A study of Canada's Centennial Celebration. Helen had previously received her Master of Arts degree from SFU and her Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia. History is not only Helen’s subject but her passion and we are fortunate indeed to have her knowledge and judgement at the disposal of our Historical Society. Well done, Helen.
