June 1999 West Vancouver Historical Society Page 7 DAISY'S DAY: A CENTURY OF LIVING By: Sandra( McGillivray) Ortgies When many people's lives span parts of two centuries, Daisy Jones, who came to West Vancouver in 1940, shows every liklihood of going into her third. Daisy was bom in Pontefract, Yorkshire, England, on May 19th, 1899, and celebrated her 100th birthday on Sunday, May 23rd, 1999, at an afternoon reception hosted by her family. Gwyneth and Dave New and three of their four sons, Ralph, Peter and John were present. (Barry lives in England). Valerie McPolin, Daisy's younger daughter and three of her four daughters: Tricia Brady, Carolyn Moore and Barbara McPolin were also present. Val's eldest daughter, Margaret Elson, who lives in Fort St. John, sent her grandmother a treasured bouquet of 100 daisies. Fifty guests, including Daisy's youngest great-grand daughter, one month old Amelia Moore, gathered at the new Kiwanis Care Centre in North Vancouver where Daisy has lived for the past year. After greeting Daisy, who was seated in her special chair, and posing for photographs with her, we all sang "Happy Birthday" accompanied by Pamela Cundy at the piano, followed by a swinging rendition of "Daisy, Daisy, Give Me Your Answer Do", with Daisy joining in. Jocelyn (Searle) and Patrick Fitzgibbon's grand daughter, eleven year old Cayley Schmid, had a unique gift for Daisy to honour her birthday. Cayley danced two Highland Dances, in traditional Scottish dress, impressing us all with her talent and agility. Cayley has since competed at a Highland Dancing event and took a first place award. No surprise to all of us who, along with Daisy, enjoyed her dancing that day. Most of Daisy's Bellevue gang of young swimmers from the late 1940's were there. Daisy responded to comments about the good times we'd all shared on the beach below 22nd Street with a smile (see The Rock in the Febmary 1996 issue of "His-tory-Onics"). Pam (Searle) Andersen, who had flown in from Australia, Jocelyn (Searle) Figzgibbon from Enderby, Diane (Longmuir) Lloyd from Fort St. John, and Sandra (McGillivray) Ortgies from Whidbey Island were catching up on years of news with Gwyneth, Val and Di's sister Pat (Longmuir) Fraser. We recalled that Daisy also encouraged us to play tennis. She was a member of the West Vancouver Tennis Club from 1940 to 1968 and rode her bicycle to the old clay courts on Fulton Avenue. As your song goes. Aunt Daisy, "....All for the love of you....". Eleanor (Lennox) McGillivray, (Sandra Ortgies' mother and a former 49 year resident of West Vancouver), was delighted to see Daisy. The Jones and McGillivray families lived next door to each other on Bellevue for many years. It was our pleasure to attend such a memorable birthday party with cake, balloons, flowers and music accenting the warm reunion of family and friends. Ed. Note: Thank you for sharing this special memory with us, Sandra and for letting us publish photographs taken at the party.. Maybe you can send some snaps taken at Daisy's birthday next year. As you say - a third century. Daisy Jones & Eleanor McGillivray The "Gang" of Swimmers: (Left to right) Jocelyn, Sandra, Diane, Valerie,Pat and Pam
