Page 4 West Vancouver Historical Society September 1999 SOCIETY NEWS CURRENT AFFAIRS AND NEWS OF GENERAL INTBRFST TO MEMBERS Special Events Activities Community Day - June 5th, 1999 By: Laureen Jones Director, Special Events The theme of "Wet & Wild" covered all activities. Our parade entry this year was rather "wild"- it seems that all the "heritage cars" were taken and signed up for the parade or, perhaps, having mechanical trouble! However, out of the blue an eye-catching yellow "Tracker" appeared, owned and driven by Susan Massineaud. Riding in it was our special guest. Historical Society member Margaret Davies, mother of our President, Helen. Thank you both for your interest in being a part of our annual parade entry. For several years we have been arranging our Display in the Visual Arts Room at the WV. Seniors' Centre. However, this coming year we are to be assigned the Fabric Arts Room in the Centre, which is open to the main entry. This room is smaller than the Visual Arts Room, but we plan on arrangements which we expect will be equally as interesting and attractive! Thank you to all the assistants who made our participation possible. We hope to see you in 2000! Harmony Arts had to battle with the elements this year, but that did not seem to dampen the enthusiasm of many West Vancouverites. The music sessions especially were, despite the evening downpours, enthusiastically attended. Fortunately the opening ceremonies were held in bright sunshine and it was good to see our own Kay Meek cut the large cake which had been specially baked for the occasion. Kay was celebrating her own birthday that day! So may your editor, on behalf of our Society members, wish a belated happy birthday to a wonderful lady who is always a good Mend to West Vancouver. Hollybum Ski Camp Heritage Project. Thanks to lola Knight for pointing out to us that the "old Lodge" is not actually a deserted building. Boarded up during the summer months, whenever the winter snow comes to the slopes it is once more made available as a "gathering place" to those who come to the mountain for winter recreation. Membership Report By: Joan Skipper Membership Chair The following new memberships have been received since our June newsletter report and we bid them welcome: Lisa Van Straten of North Vancouver; Betty Berry of Courtenay, B.C., and Ethel Van Epp of West Vancouver Very little activity has occurred during the summer months, but there are still a few members who have not renewed for various reasons. We have, therefore, cancelled newsletter mailings to these former members. We look forward to the coming September meeting. AND THIS IS THE WAY IT WAS Thanks For The Memories, Barbara By: Anne Vernon After many years of hard work for the Society, both behind the scenes and in the enjoyable "History-Onics"articles she has produced for our delight, Barbara Johnson has decided that she needs to spend more time with the family as well as wishing to take life a little easier. So now, very sadly, we have to say goodbye to her as our ConMbutions Editor. Since taking on the job of producing this page for "History-Onics", Barbara, always with Hal's help and backing, has revived many happy memories for our members and we shall all miss her delightful touch - none more than myself. There was never any last-minute terror of a missing article when Barbara was producing it! Thank you for all your loving support Barbara and please, when you can find the time, send in stories from you and Hal - they will always be most welcome. -o-o-O-o-o-
