John Atkin, author and historian par excellence, will be our speaker in September. He has long been fascinated by the wonders of neon lighting and, in fact, a very successful display of his exhibition on this subject has been running at the Vancouver Museum this summer. John Atkin is the author of "Heritage Walks Around Vancouver" (with Michael Kluckner), and "Strathcona: Vancouver's First Neighbourhood", both winners of the City of Vancouver Heritage Award. He has published numerous articles on heritage issues, including a cover story for the Georgia Straight on Kingsway's modem history, as well as articles on neon and on Strathcona for Chuck Davis's "Greater Vancouver Book". As a heritage advocate, John Atkin has cofounded and served, both as vice president and president. Heritage Vancouver, and now sits on the board of directors of the Heritage Society of British Columbia. He has created, written and presented a number of unique and popular walking tours covering a diverse range of subjects, including terra cotta, coffee shops and many Vancouver neighbourhoods.
